A studio course focusing on projects dealing with the materials and techniques of drawing, including basic concepts of line, perspective and value.

Learning Outcomes
Students completing this course will:

  • Develop fundamental skills of observational drawing practice.
  • Demonstrate appropriate application of sighting and measuring techniques, relative proportion, space, shape, value, line variation, perspective, gesture, and composition.
  • Develop a professional sense of craftsmanship and presentation.
  • Cultivate drawing skills and work habits using all available resources, tools, and applications.
  • Learn basics of the written and oral critique process

  • Sighting and measuring linear dimensions and angles (i.e. Mondrian tool)

  • Exploring form and space with line: contour line, structural/organizational line, and gesture
  • Exploring form through planar analysis
  • Exploration of mark-making including line weight
  • Eraser as a drawing tool
  • One- and Two-Point Perspective
  • Atmospheric Perspective
  • Positive/Negative shapes
  • Push/pull of space to create visual emphasis
  • Tonal value exploration of form
  • Value contrast and value pattern

  • Introduction to figurative work including self-portrait
  • Introduction to landscape

  • Drawings may be graded by individual grade or portfolio

Grading guidelines

  • A minimum of 70% of this course’s grade should be in-class drawing projects with some variation allowed in terms of weight for sketchbook and critiques
