Learning Outcomes Upon completion of Elementary French I the students will do the following in these 5 basic skill groups:
Listening
- Develop aural comprehension of isolated words, such as cognates, borrowed words, and high-frequency social conventions, as well as aural comprehension of short phrases, simple questions and commands.
Speaking
- Pronounce the alphabet correctly.
- Produce isolated words and high-frequency phrases, as well as express basic courtesies and the simplest of questions.
- Practice simple dialogue with fellow students, employing active vocabulary and grammatical structures.
Reading
- Identify isolated words and common phrases including cognates and borrowed words.
- Read and discuss simple materials such as invitations, calendars, and short cultural dialogues and articles.
Writing
- Identify all the symbols in the alphabetic system, including correct use of diacritical marks.
- Write isolated words, common phrases, very simple questions, numbers, and dates.
- Produce basic sentences and several short paragraphs.
Culture
- Identify major Francophone countries.
- Discuss certain aspects of French culture, such as greetings, major holidays, typical school day, and the family.
