GERM 1013 - Elementary German II Description This course is a continuation of GERM 1003 . Presentations of vocabulary, grammatical structures, and German culture enable the student to strengthen listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
Pre-Requisite Completion of GERM 1003 with a grade greater than or equal to C.

Learning Outcomes Upon completion of Elementary German II the students will do the following in these 5 basic skill groups:
Listening
- Understand sentence-length utterances consisting of re-combinations of learned vocabulary and grammatical structures.
- Develop skills to understand the main ideas of a brief dialogue, television programs or recordings by a native speaker on relevant topics created specifically for non-native speakers of German at this level.Speaking
- Produce isolated words and learned phrases within familiar contexts.
- Ask and answer simple questions involving learned material, while starting to show signs of spontaneity of speech.
- Practice correct pronunciation of German sounds, with emphasis on umlauted vowels.
Reading
- Analyze short poems or excerpts from fiction, brief cultural readings and dialogues, as well as simple authentic materials such as tourist guides, advertisements, and post cards.
Writing
- Write isolated words, familiar phrases, and basic questions and sentences, employing active vocabulary and grammatical structures.
- Produce short paragraphs in present, present perfect, simple past and past perfect tenses on familiar topics.
- Employ the use of the genitive case with regards to time and prepositions.
Culture and History
- Expand their knowledge of several German-speaking countries, specifically Austria and Switzerland.
- Analyze a few primary works of literature and visual arts.
- Discuss Germany from 1945 to the present.

- Present perfect, simple past and past perfect tenses of verbs, comparative and superlative, direct and indirect pronouns, adjective endings, reflexive verbs, two-way verbs and prepositions.
Learning Activities
Informational gap activities, listening comprehension, open question and answer activities, surveys, and questionnaires completed in pairs or small groups and conducted in the target language emphasizing both verbal and written responses.

- Tests, quizzes, workbook, lab program, and final exam.
Grading guidelines
Standardized quizzes and exams are graded with a common key. Compositions and verbal assessments are graded with a rubric.
