SPAN 2003 - Intermediate Spanish I

Description
Students will be expected to apply their prior knowledge of Spanish and expand on their skills in speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension concerning past, present and future events. It includes readings in Spanish literature, culture, and civilization. Class is conducted in Spanish.

Pre-Requisite
Completion of SPAN 1013 with a grade greater than or equal to C.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of Intermediate Spanish I the students will do the following in the four basic skill groups:

Reading
Read and extract the most critical points from brief passages written for nonnative speakers that incorporate basic structures and vocabulary taught in the previous course and the following new elements: imperfect tense of verbs, por / para, relative pronouns, present subjunctive and more advanced vocabulary.

Writing
Write an in-depth personal essay demonstrating correct usage of preterit and imperfect verbs in narration, the use of se in structures describing “unplanned events” and more advanced vocabulary.

Speaking

Demonstrate the ability to manipulate verbs “on the fly” by responding to directed questions in class.
Express personal opinions orally in response to questions assigned in previous classes.
Converse with more than one student in small group activities.
Create questions to elicit and introduce new information into conversations.

Aural Comprehension

Demonstrate understanding of longer spoken passages that incorporate course grammar and vocabulary as spoken by native and non-native speakers at an increased speed through written and spoken responses.
Respond correctly to questions in the target language about lessons and homework using both previous and new verb forms.
Demonstrate ability to extract main ideas from passages that contain an increased amount of unstudied vocabulary.

Standard Practices
Topics List

Vocabulary: Travel, technology, health, household.
Grammar: Imperfect tense of verbs, por / para, hacer and expressions of time, relative pronouns, present subjunctive.

Learning Activities
Informational gap activities, listening comprehension, open question and answer activities, surveys, and questionnaires completed in pairs or small groups and conducted the target language emphasizing both verbal and written responses

Assessments
Quizzes, exams, compositions, and verbal assessments.

Grading guidelines
Standardized quizzes and exams are graded with a common key. Compositions and verbal assessments are graded with a rubric.
