ART 2133 - Watermedia II


Description
Further exploration of watercolor, gouache, acrylic painting, and mixed media with emphasis on composition, design, and experimentation. Masterworks and other sources of inspiration will be studied. Idea development and personal expression will be emphasized.

Pre-Requisite
ART 1303 and ART 2123. Recommended: ART 1313 or Portfolio review and consent of instructor.

Standard Practices
Topics List

Subjects will be chosen from (but not limited to) the following:

  • Explore a variety of supports for watermedia which could include different papers (weights, textures), rice papers, watercolor illustration boards, etc.
  • Participate in instructor-directed class critques that inform the students of their successes and areas that need improvement.
  • Students will explore instructor-directed subject matter and independent projects in a variety of watermedia techniques that include traditional watercolor painting, experimental, and mixed media.
  • Research techniques, artists, and cultures. 
  • Curating artwork and portfolio building
  • Writing an artist’s statement
  • Documenting artwork 
  • The fundamentals of self-promotion
  • Co-curating and exhibiting a group exhibition

Learning Activities

  • Question and answer activity during instructor demonstrations and/or presentations (e.g. powerpoints )
  • In class painting.
  • Option: Require a number of paintings to be done outside of class. Graded or Extra Credit 
  • Option: Students research an artist/culture, present to research to the class, link painting project to that research.
  • Critiques (entire class and/or smaller peer critiques)

Assessments

  • Paintings graded individually and/or portfolio
  • Artist Statement
  • Creating a body of works for exhibition and curating it in collaboration with others for a group exhibition
  • Photography and written documentation of artwork
  • Creating a website for artwork

Grading guidelines

  • A minimum of 70% of this course’s grade should be in-class painting projects with some variation allowed for critiques and extra work.
