ART 2123 - Watermedia I Description An introductory course focusing on the basic materials and techniques associated with watercolor, gouache, and acrylic painting. This skill-building course will encompass aspects of composition and design through observation and imagination. Traditional and experimental techniques will form a foundation for more personally expressive work.
Pre-Requisite Completion of ART 1303 with a grade greater than or equal to C. Note: Recommended course to take is ART 1313 or Portfolio review and instructor consent.

Standard Practices Topics List
Subjects will be chosen from (but not limited to) the following:
- Demonstrations and discussions concerning expressiveness and inventiveness.
- Participation in instructor-directed class critiques that inform students of their successes and areas that need improvement.
- Research subjects, styles, and techniques encountered throughout the course.
- Basic beginning information on techniques and paint properties, basic geometric forms, landscapes, still lifes, people, flowers, abstraction, non representation, and experimental (including mixed media).
- An art history component to enhance and broaden the understanding of the watermedia tradition, of design, and of composition.

- Question and answer activity during instructor demonstrations and/or presentations (e.g. powerpoints)
- In class painting.
- Option: Require a number of paintings to be done outside of class. Graded or Extra Credit
- Critiques (entire class and/or smaller peer critiques)
Assessments
Paintings graded individually and/or portfolio.
Grading guidelines
A minimum of 70% of this course’s grade should be in-class painting projects with some variation allowed for critiques and extra paintings.
