ENGA 0033 - College Reading


Description
A reading course designed to help students gain skills they can apply to college level reading requirements. Active reading strategies, comprehension, and vocabulary are emphasized, along with an introduction to library resources.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Define vocabulary words using context clues and word part knowledge.
  • Apply active reading techniques to identify topics of paragraphs and longer selections.
  • Apply active reading techniques to identify and explain main ideas (stated or implied) of paragraphs.
  • Apply active reading techniques to identify and explain theses (stated or implied) of multi-paragraph selections.
  • Apply active reading techniques to identify major and minor supporting details.
  • Apply active reading techniques to identify common writing patterns. 
  • Apply active reading techniques to a variety of media and disciplines. 
  • Apply critical reading skills to identify tone and bias.
  • Provide evidence and analyze reading selections for inferences.
  • Interact with readings from diverse cultural perspectives.
