Learning Outcomes Upon completion of Intermediate German I the students will do the following in these 5 basic skill groups:
Listening
- Understand sentence-length utterances consisting of re-combinations of learned vocabulary and grammatical structures.
- Be able to sustain understanding over longer stretches of connected discourse pertinent to course grammar and vocabulary.
Speaking
- Successfully participate in simple conversations and discussion pertinent to thematic chapters.
- Ask and answer more difficult questions involving learned material and personal opinions on various topics.
- Continue to practice correct pronunciation of German sounds, phrases, and words.
Reading
- Analyze authentic texts, poems or excerpts from fiction or non-fiction, cultural readings, dialogues, and magazine and newspaper articles.
Writing
- Write statements and questions in present, present and past perfect, and simple past tenses.
- Produce paragraphs related to personal preferences, daily routine, and in response to the readings in each chapter.
- Compose an essay in response to a feature-length film in German.
Culture
- Expand knowledge of German culture.
- Discuss primary works of German literature (both East and West German writers), visual arts, magazine and newspaper articles, and film.

Vocabulary
- The world of work, multicultural society, youth and senior citizens, stereotypes, the environment.
Grammar
- Extensive review of da- and wo- compounds, adjective endings, genitive case, comparison of adjectives and adverbs, reflexive pronouns and verbs, and introduction to relative pronouns and clauses, extended modifiers, subjunctive I and II and passive voice.
Learning Activities
Informational gap activities, listening comprehension, open question and answer activities, surveys, and questionnaires completed in pairs or small groups and conducted in the target language emphasizing both verbal and written responses.
Assessments
- Tests, oral assessment, workbook, lab program, and final exam.
Grading guidelines
Standardized quizzes and exams are graded with a common key. Compositions and verbal assessments are graded with a rubric.
