HIM 2433 - Healthcare Information Systems Description Introduction to the concepts of common software applications, system selection and implementation, data quality, storage and retrieval, security and privacy used in healthcare. The course focuses on how these systems and issues affect, and are affected by the healthcare profession.
Pre-Requisite Acceptance into the Health Information Management program of study.

Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe the functions of the basic components of the personal computer to include hardware, software, networks, and Internet technologies
- Identify and discuss the impact of computers in healthcare in all areas within the facility.
- Illustrate how spreadsheet software can perform statistical calculations and graphical capabilities within the same utility.
- Identify the common data sets for reporting to the various agencies by most healthcare facilities that are under the Medicare and Medicaid mandates.
- Develop queries to retrieve data contained in the database.
- Develop a request for proposal
- Identify the steps in both the system selection process and system implementation
- Design and generate reports
- Design screens
- Differentiate between the various software products used in the HIM department.
- Differentiate between a decision support system and an executive information system.
- Define clinical information system.
- Make recommendations on the use and implementation of document management systems.
- Participate in the development and implementation of an electronic health record (EHR).
- Explain some of the benefits of using speech recognition technology when coupled with the computerized health record for clinical documentation.
- Discuss federal security regulation.
- Develop policies and procedures related to privacy and security practices.
- Participate in risk analysis.
- Describe use of mobile health in healthcare.
- Describe how technology is used to provide patient safety.
