HIM 2523 - Healthcare Statistics


Description
Compilation and usage of various types of administrative and health care statistics including vital records. Introduction to the health information research process and institutional review board functions. Use of computers for computation and data display.

Pre-Requisite
Acceptance into the Health Information Management program of study and completion of MATH 1003  or higher-level mathematics course with a grade greater than or equal to C.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Define and apply basic statistical terms and principles.
  2. Abstract and report data for facility-wide quality management and performance improvement programs.
  3. Analyze clinical data to identify trends that demonstrate quality, safety, and effectiveness of healthcare.
  4. Collect, organize, and present data for quality management, utilization management, risk management and other related studies.
  5. Identify vital statistics and various types of healthcare rates to include: census, bed occupancy, bed turnover, length of stay, death rates, autopsy rates, infection rates and service days.
  6. Apply Institutional Review Board (IRB) processes and policies.
  7. Understand the various data interpretation issues and the importance of verification of data.
  8. Apply ethical guidelines in the use of statistics.
